PMI's four PMP experience pathways are 60 months with a secondary credential, 48 months with an associate or qualifying vocational credential, 36 months with a bachelor's degree or equivalent, or 24 months with a GAC-accredited bachelor's or postgraduate degree. Count non-overlapping project leadership experience within the previous 10 years.

Who should get the PMP?
The PMP is right for you if:

The CAPM makes sense if:

The PMP tests applied judgment: it presents complex scenarios and asks what an experienced project manager should do, considering stakeholders, constraints, and organizational context. Check current job descriptions in your target country and role. A credential's relevance depends on the employer, responsibilities and experience required; no salary advantage between CAPM and PMP is established by this comparison.

From CAPM to PMP: the typical path
- Earn the CAPM with 23 contact hours of project management education and a secondary degree.
- Take on roles where you lead and direct project work, and keep a simple log of each project: dates, your role and the outcomes you delivered. You will need it for the PMP application.
- Keep the CAPM active with 15 PDUs every three years while you build experience.
- Once you meet your applicable 24-, 36-, 48- or 60-month project leadership pathway, apply for the PMP. An active CAPM also satisfies the PMP's 35-hour project management education requirement, so you do not need a separate course to qualify.
