PMP Application Process 2026: How to Apply, Step by Step
You apply for the PMP online through your PMI account. You enter your education, your 35 hours of project-management education (or an active CAPM), and each qualifying project with dates and a short description of your leadership work, then submit. PMI reviews the application and may select it for a random audit. Once it is approved and paid, you have a one-year eligibility period to take the exam, with up to three attempts, booked through Pearson VUE.
This guide covers how to do each step well, with a strong and a weak experience description side by side and a calm plan for the audit. To check whether you qualify first, use the PMP eligibility calculator or read the PMP exam requirements.
The application at a glance
| Step | What you do | Have ready |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Account | Create or sign in to your PMI account; decide on membership | Your legal name exactly as on your government ID |
| 2. Records | Collect dates, roles and proof before you open the form | Project timeline, verifier contacts, 35-hour certificate or CAPM details |
| 3. Experience entries | Write one entry per project in PMI's lifecycle language | Non-overlapping months in the previous 10 years |
| 4. Submit | Review every field, then submit | A saved copy of everything you entered |
| 5. Review and pay | Follow the status in your PMI account and pay the exam fee | Payment method; audit documents in case you are selected |
| 6. Schedule | Book with Pearson VUE inside your eligibility period | A target date that fits your study plan |
Step 1: Create your PMI account
Start at PMI's PMP certification page and sign in or create an account. Use your legal name exactly as it appears on the government ID you will show on exam day, because Pearson VUE checks that the two match. Fixing a name mismatch late is a distraction you do not need.
This is also when to decide on PMI membership. PMI's US listing shows the exam at $405 for members and $655 for non-members, with membership at $164 a year. Membership plus the member exam fee comes to $569, which is less than the non-member fee. Prices can vary by country, so confirm the total at checkout. Our PMP exam cost guide breaks the numbers down.
Step 2: Gather your records before you open the form
The form itself is not long. Most of the work is collecting accurate facts. Put them in one document or spreadsheet first:
- Education: your highest credential, the institution and the dates.
- Project list: for each project, the title, organization, your role, start month, end month, and the name and contact details of a supervisor or stakeholder who can confirm your role.
- Month count: a timeline showing that your non-overlapping leadership months in the previous 10 years meet your pathway (60, 48, 36 or 24 months). Overlapping projects count once.
- 35 hours: the certificate from your course with the provider, course title, dates and hours, or your CAPM details if you hold an active CAPM.
Contact your verifiers now, not after an audit notice. Tell them you are applying, confirm their current email address, and check that they remember the project the way you do.
Step 3: Write each experience entry
Each project is a separate entry with dates and a short description. The description is where weak applications show. Reviewers need to see that you led the work, so describe your own actions across the project lifecycle (initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, closing) or, for agile work, the equivalent cadence. Keep within the character limit the form shows.
A reliable structure is four parts: the objective in one sentence, your role, what you did in each phase, and the outcome. Write in the first person and use verbs that show leadership: led, defined, planned, negotiated, approved, escalated, closed.
Weak versus strong: predictive project
Weak
"I was responsible for the warehouse system project. I managed the team and the vendor and we delivered the system successfully."
No objective, no phases, no decisions. It reads like participation, not leadership.
Strong
"Objective: replace the inventory system at three warehouses. Role: project manager. Initiating: drafted the charter with the operations director and identified stakeholders. Planning: built the WBS, schedule, budget and risk register. Executing: led a team of eight and managed the vendor contract. Monitoring and controlling: tracked progress against the baseline and ran change control for scope requests. Closing: obtained sign-off, handed over to support and recorded lessons learned."
Weak versus strong: agile project
Weak
"Scrum master for the mobile app team. Ran the ceremonies."
Too short to show outcomes or leadership beyond attending meetings.
Strong
"Objective: deliver a customer self-service app in iterative releases. Role: delivery lead for a cross-functional team. Worked with the product owner to shape the product vision and backlog, facilitated release planning, sprint planning, reviews and retrospectives, tracked velocity to forecast releases, removed impediments with other departments, managed dependencies and risks, and coordinated each release with operations."
Hybrid projects can mix both vocabularies: a predictive plan for hardware or contracts and iterative delivery for software, for example. Describe the parts you led. Do not paste the same text into every entry; each project should read as its own piece of work.
Dates matter as much as words. Enter the months you actually led each project, make sure your total counts each overlapping month only once, and leave out leadership that ended more than 10 years ago.
Step 4: Submit
Before you submit, read the whole application once more as a reviewer would. Check that every date range matches your records, that each description names your actions, and that your education and 35-hour details match your certificates. Save a copy of everything you entered: you will want it if you are audited and when you brief your verifiers.
Step 5: Review and payment
After you submit, PMI reviews the application. We do not quote review times, because they are PMI's to set: follow the status and any instructions shown in your PMI account and respond to messages from PMI promptly. When the application is approved, you pay the exam fee ($405 for members or $655 for non-members on PMI's US listing). Your account will show whether your application has been selected for audit.
The PMP audit: what it is and how to handle it
PMI audits a random selection of applications. Being selected is not an accusation; it is a check that the application matches reality. If your records were ready before you applied, the audit is mostly paperwork.
What to prepare, ideally before you submit:
- A copy of your degree, diploma or other education credential.
- Proof of your 35 hours of project-management education, such as the course certificate, or your CAPM details.
- For each project, a supervisor or stakeholder who can verify your role and dates.
- Your saved copy of the descriptions you submitted, to share with each verifier.
How to respond calmly if you are selected:
- Read PMI's audit instructions in full before doing anything. They can include supervisor or stakeholder verification of experience and proof of your 35 hours.
- Note any deadline PMI states and plan backwards from it.
- Contact each verifier, explain what PMI needs and send them the exact entry you submitted.
- Collect the documents and submit them the way PMI's instructions describe, nothing more and nothing less.
- Keep copies of everything you send, and watch your PMI account for the outcome.
The audits that cause stress are the ones where the candidate has to reconstruct dates, track down a former manager or rewrite a description from memory. All of that is avoidable by preparing in Step 2.
After approval: your eligibility period
Once PMI approves your application and you pay, you have a one-year eligibility period with up to three exam attempts. Retake fees are commonly reported at $275 for members and $375 for non-members; confirm them in your PMI account.
You schedule through Pearson VUE, either at a test center or online with OnVUE. OnVUE needs a private room, a webcam, a stable connection and a clear desk. Your government ID must match the name on your PMI application. For check-in timing and permitted items, follow your Pearson VUE confirmation. Our PMP exam day checklist covers the day itself.
A sensible approach is to pick a target date from your study plan rather than the first open slot. The exam has 180 questions (170 scored plus 10 unscored pretest) in 240 minutes, built on the July 2026 Examination Content Outline, so give yourself time to take at least one full-length timed practice exam before the real one.
Common application mistakes
- Counting overlapping projects twice to reach the month threshold.
- Describing the team's work instead of your own decisions and actions.
- Pasting one generic description into every project entry.
- Including leadership that ended more than 10 years ago.
- Losing the 35-hour certificate or leaving verifiers uninformed until an audit arrives.
- Using a name on the account that does not match your government ID.

Frequently asked questions
- How long does PMI take to review a PMP application?
- PMI sets its own review times, so this guide does not quote one. Follow the status and any instructions in your PMI account and reply to PMI messages promptly.
- What happens if my PMP application is selected for audit?
- PMI audits a random selection of applications. You follow PMI's instructions, which can include having a supervisor or stakeholder verify your experience and sending proof of your 35 hours of project-management education.
- Can I list two projects that ran at the same time?
- Yes, list both if each shows leadership work, but count the months they overlap only once when you check your total against your pathway.
- How much detail should each PMP experience description include?
- State the objective, your role, what you did in each lifecycle phase or agile cadence, and the outcome, all within the character limit the form shows. Describe your own actions, not the team's.
- What happens after my PMP application is approved?
- After you pay the exam fee, you get a one-year eligibility period with up to three exam attempts. You schedule with Pearson VUE at a test center or online with OnVUE.
